PROJECT: Basic Subwoofer Enclosure
TREATEMENT: Sealing with VB-1X
INSTALLER: Paul M. Messett / Cascade Audio Engineering / Bend, OR, USA

For this project you will need...
(1) VB-1X 1 Gallon
(1) SG-1 Spray Application Tool or paintbrush

Step 1: Here is the basic MDF subwoofer enclosure. Make sure any debris and/or dust is removed from the interior of the enclosure prior to applying the VB-1X product.

Step 2: Check the air pressure before application to ensure good coverage of the surface to be treated. Notice that the rear panel of the enclosure has not been attached at this point. After the initial application of VB-1X, the rear plate will be attached and then treated through the opening in the front baffle plate.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: The idea here is not to damp vibration because the walls of the enclosure are 3/4" thick. You would need to apply atleast 1/4" of VB-1X to damp the walls effectively. Rather, in this application, the VB-1X will soak into the wood substrate and seal the pores as well as seal the seams and gaps at the corners where the plates meet. When dry, the VB-1X will maintain a different density than the MDF and create an impedance mismatch. This treatment will yield a 1 to 1.5 db gain in overall output.

Step 3: Turn the box over to ensure even coverage on all interior surfaces.

Step 4: Continue spraying the VB-1X product.

Step 5: Here is a look at the treated interior. Remember, the rear panel will be treated after it has been glued and nailed into place.

Close Up: Here is a close up look at the treated surface. Allow the VB-1X product to cure thoroughly before installing the speaker(s). If you do not, the moisture contained within the enclosure will damage the voice coil and cause the speaker to fail.

Recommendation: Dont forget to maximize the performance of any speaker enclosure by installing a Deflex D12 backwave damper.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions or comments you may have regarding the installation or application of the VB-1X product.
